Zion Episcopal Church
"Disciples Making Disciples"

A Brief  History of Zion Church

The first Episcopal Church service in Colton was held on August 21, 1874. In 1877, the first organized congregation was formed. This proved to be a thriving Christian group and in these early years, they were strengthened by the interest and support of Mrs. Elizabeth Clarkson of Potsdam.

After Elizabeth Clarkson's death in 1883, her son Thomas and daughters Lavinia and Elizabeth determined that they would give a house of worship in loving memory of their mother. One year later, on July 16, 1884 The Right Reverend William Crosswell Doane, then Bishop of the Diocese of Albany, came to Colton and presided at the Rites and Ceremonies of Consecration of Zion Church.
